My company may choose CA as a standard for Service Management. My background and interest is mainly in network management. I've been looking at the data sheets for NSM and Spectrum, and these products seem to overlap quite a bit. How are these used in the real world? Do most users pick one or the other? Or do they compliment each other in some fashion? Can anyone recommend some literature to get more familiar with them? Thanks, Todd |

Spectrum and NSM do have a lot of similarities but this is the skinny. NSM is the manager of managers and integrates directly with other CA products like Service Desk, Unicenter Asset Portfolio Management, Asset Management, and Service Delivery Products. NSM is more of an enterprise solution where Spectrum is more of a point solution or module of NSM as it pertains to the CA stack. NSM is the system monitoring tool that supports multiple platforms and can monitor AD, Exchange, Databases and Web Technology at a much more granular level across multiple platforms. Spectrum is a great network monitoring tool and CA acquired it to replace the old Advanced Network Option product. Spectrum does not yet have the ability to integrate at the database level (MDB) for configuration items. So the best way to use the products is together.
If you have questions feel free to call me and I can discuss. I could spend a lot of time on this subject with the pros and cons depending on the ultimate vision and direction.
