Hey everyone, We are using Brightstor ARCServe Backup Version 11.0 with an HP StorageWorks DLT VS80 Drive. The job is backing up about 10GB of data. This job takes between 18 and 32 hours to complete. Obviously something is wrong but in reviewing the setup and logs it is not apparent to me. I found a vague reference on the web about the VS80 DLT drive and Brightstor suggesting that the tapes be formatted before the job but that did not resolve anything. Any suggestion on what to look for or how to fix? Thanks. Mike Johnston |

| The average speed is about 7 MB minute. The max uncompressed speed is 3 MB/s with a capacity of 40/80. HP claims 80 GB in 4 hours or so. |

| Make sure the SCSI connections are good. I had this issue with a stand alone Sony tape drive. The backup time were long, but it still backed up. I found out that an admin at a field office removed the terminator from the drive. |

You should be doing 400 to 800 MegsX minutes, Have this work before at this speed? Check SCSI card make sure it can do at least 30 megXsecond.. |

| According to the user it did work at normal speed when they first got it. I can't vouch for the accuracy of that statement however. |

| Next thought, could a dirty tape drive cause this much degradation of performance? Most of my has been with DDS drives and they will complain if not cleaned regularly. |

| Make sure the tape drive is not plugged into the array controller. It needs to be on its own high speed data controller. |

| I am having the same problem since I upgraded. I was pushing close to a Gig a minute, now I am down to around 300 MB a minute. Sometimes when I delete the log files it helps, but that is no longer working. Ver. 11 is also causing my Netware servers to run out of memory over the course of a week. I will be calling tech support on this matter and will let you know what they say. |

| Well I opened the hood on the server and no joy on the probable causes. The tape drive is on it's own SCSI controller card and the cable is properly terminated. The last successful jobs ran at 6.9 MB per minute and 18 MB per minute (Best observed speed to date). I am almost ready to toss in the DLT and install a DAT or DS3 drive but would really like to spare the client the expense in addition to the fact that the cause of this problem is driving me nuts. I'll keep everyone in the loop if I find a solution. |

OK folks. Somewhere I found some info on block size and that less than 64K block size can cause real performance issues with an HP DLT VS80 Drive. This had info on changing the block size but I can no longer find it. When I first looked at the block size I saw 512. My assumtion was that it meant 512K. Now I believe it means 512 BYTES. Does anyone know how to adjust the block size setting in Brightstor? I am on V 11.1. Thanks Mike |
